About Chiropractic
Chiropractic is based on the knowledge that tension, misalignment or altered function of our spine (subluxations) can interfere with the flow of information and energy along your nerves and may dramatically affect the function of your body in many different ways.
Doctors of Chiropractic focus on improving the function of your spine, which helps to free the flow of information throughout your nervous system. This helps your body to better coordinate its functions, adapt to stress and heal itself. With Chiropractic many people naturally find relief from aches, pains and a huge range of symptoms from various conditions, as well as improved flexibility and general health.
Subluxations
Subluxations are interferences to the nervous system due to altered spinal motion and tension of the spinal cord altering the flow of information and energy. The causes of subluxations can be physical (lifting, bending, sitting etc), chemical (environmental toxins, food additives etc) or emotional (stress, depression, anxiety). We correct subluxations with gentle Adjustments that restore motion, remove tension from muscles and any interference to your nervous system. Our Philosophy
We believe that subluxations can impact seriously on a person’s health and their ability to heal, regenerate and live their life to their full potential.
We believe that people should enjoy optimal health and wellness – for a life time. We also believe that prevention of disease and ill-health is less costly, less painful and more enjoyable for all concerned. Our aim is to provide the finest health care to you and your family. We want our patients to be inspired about their health so they can make informed choices to increase their optimal health potential. Your First Appointment:
It’s really important to us to understand your health thoroughly. On the first visit we will take your case history, perform a thorough spinal, muscular and neurological examination and relevant orthopaedic testing. This will help us determine whether Chiropractic can help you. If required, spinal X-rays may be requested. Cranial (bones of the skull), and organ reflex assessment may also be done within this visit. Your second Appointment:
This visit involves a discussion about your X-ray, your spinal assessment results, how Chiropractic works and recommendations for your health care. Once we have answered all your questions we will be able to perform your first Chiropractic adjustment. Three Types of Care
There are three types of care that we will discuss with you. Initial intensive care is aimed at restoring function of your nerves, increasing flexibility and decreasing obvious symptoms. Following this is Corrective care, which stabilises the spine further by strengthening ligaments and muscles. Now your healthy spine and nervous system promotes further healing and improved function of the body in general. Once you have achieved this goal, you can commence Wellness care. This involves regular check-ups to maintain spinal alignment, minimise degeneration and maximum health and wellness. How long will I have care for? People visit Chiropractor for many different reasons. Some have recent injuries while others have more advanced conditions. Your care will be specifically designed around your condition, health goals and how long the problem has been there. Many patients initially visit a Chiropractor for crisis care’’. For instance, when they are in pain or have another obvious symptom. Others visit for Rehabilitative or maintenance care. This is when the pain/symptom have gone but the Chiropractic care is continued to further strengthen and rehabilitate the spine to stay strong and prevent further deterioration. If your condition has been there a long time or your goal is to rehabilitate /maintain your spinal health it can take time. We all know that going to the gym for 6 weeks will not keep you fit and healthy for a lifetime! Regular Chiropractic check ups are recommended for people of all ages. It is no different to having your teeth checked regularly. You use your nervous system and spine daily even when you are asleep! Regular care may also prevent further degeneration or worsening of your condition. Have a chat with us to see what types of care suit your long term gaols. Kids in the Practice...
Yes! We are a paediatric trained practice. We encourage our adult patients to have their children under regular Chiropractic care. This helps straighten out all those physical, chemical or emotional stresses as they occur. But how do you know if your kids have spinal problems? Sometimes these findings are very subtle so it’s always best to get a professional opinion from a Chiropractor however checking your children’s posture can be a good start to see if there may be spinal issues you are missing.
Do you or your children have bad posture? Proper body alignment not only helps prevent pain and injury, but also can boost your confidence and mood. Improving your posture will likely take some time and conscious effort, but the feel-good benefits are worth it. Use the following guidelines to check your own posture as well as your family. If you have any of the below it would be worth making a visit to discuss how this can be improved and how to prevent further problems. 1. General posture. When standing looking from behind, look to see if the head, shoulder and hips are level?
2. Forward head posture. From the side, is the head forward or in line with the centre of the shoulder? Your head becomes increasingly heavy with every inch of forward head posture, causing ore strain. One rule of thumb is that for every inch that the head is held forward in poor posture, an additional 10 pounds of weight is felt on the cervical spine. 3. Scoliosis. From behind, does your spine go straight? If not, there could be a scoliosis. It is usually seen with uneven shoulders, shoulder blades sticking out and hips uneven however this is not always the case. This is something to be carefully monitored particularly on children. 4. Desk, mobile phone and iPad posture. One of the biggest modern day concerns for posture is the amount of time we spend at desks and using electronics. Do you or your child sit hunched over?
Chiropractic and Pregnancy Pregnancy is an exciting time for you and your family. However, as your pregnancy progresses your body undergoes substantial changes physically, chemically and emotionally. Chiropractors regularly care for pregnant patients helping them relieve the stress of pregnancy on their body. Back pain during pregnancy is a common complaint. As you gain weight your centre of gravity changes, and your hormones are relaxing the ligaments in the joints of your pelvis. This is particularly the case in the later months of pregnancy and may result in an increased curve in the lower back putting pressure on the pelvic joints and muscles of the lower back. This altered posture can then lead to upper back, neck and shoulder pain. Restricted breathing, pubic bone instability and headaches can also occur. At our practice we have a wholistic approach to treatment and it is no different during pregnancy. Special care is taken to make sure you are comfortable and treatment is gentle and specific. It is our aim to balance the pelvis,
spine and pubic bone to maximize the pelvic outlet for childbirth. During pregnancy, your body makes a hormone called relaxin that allows ligaments in the pelvic area to relax and the joints to become looser in preparation for the birth process. However, this same hormone can be the reason for back pain. It is believed the relaxin stays in your body well after childbirth (especially if breast feeding) so post pregnancy care is recommended to stabilize the pelvis during recovery. We are here to help you have a healthier more comfortable pregnancy experience. Your Doctor of Chiropractic Dr Leanne Yates
